As of January 2025, India has reported its first cases of HMPV.
HMPV is a respiratory virus know to cause illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory issues, particularly in young children.
Cases Confirmed Across Multiple Cities
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed seven cases (as of todays date) in various cities:
- Nagpur, Maharashtra: 2 cases reported on January 7, 2025.
- Bengaluru, Karnataka: 2 cases reported on January 6, 2025.
- Ahmedabad, Gujarat: 2 case reported on January 6, 2025.
- Chennai and Salem, Tamil Nadu: 2 case each reported on January 6, 2025.
Among these cases is an eight-month-old boy in Bengaluru who tested positive for both HMPV and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).
And a three-month-old girl in Nagpur diagnosed with HMPV.
Government Response and Public Advisory
The Union Health Ministry has stated that there is no immediate cause for alarm but emphasizes the importance of vigilance.
